Anchorage is Alaska’s largest city, a port with over 300,000 residents. Like many cities in the state, it is sandwiched between sound and mountain in a beautiful setting. Winters can be harsh but summers are moderate and warm, and during the months of May-September, Anchorage is a lovely place to visit. A motorhome rental will help you to explore not only the city but the beautiful surroundings which include fjords, waterfalls, glaciers and plenty of wilderness.

Downtown is the historic heart of Anchorage. You can still visit Oscar Anderson House, the first home built in Anchorage amongst the sea of tents. The Anchorage Museum is right in the middle of the Downtown area, a story of the history of Alaska. There are also several parks downtown including Delaney Park Strip, a long piece of land which has served several purposes over the years. It was originally a firebreak protecting the small township from the surrounding forest, and has also been an airstrip, golf course and a makeshift housing area in the 1940s. It now houses ball fields, a gym, an ice rink and a locomotive. A great way to get a feel for Anchorage is to walk or bike the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail which begins downtown and follows the coast of Cook Inlet for 14 miles.

The outskirts of the city hold some great places to visit too. The Alaska Native Heritage Centre displays the various native Alaskan cultures with displays, dancers and guided walks which show all aspects of life from the native cultures. Anchorage is also home to the Alaska Botanical Garden which showcases the plants that thrive in the northerly climate and conditions. Anchorage has a small but friendly zoo and a market in the Northway Mall parking lot every Saturday and Sunday during summer.

For those who prefer to be more active in their sightseeing, Anchorage has a lot to offer. Hiking in the area is spectacular. To the East of the city is a favourite trail, Glen Alps. There is a small parking fee at the trailhead and from here you can hike a number of different routes at different difficulty levels. The most popular day hike is a climb up Flattop Mountain. Biking is also a favourite recreational activity in and around the city, and there are several places where you can hire bikes for urban or mountain biking. Wildlife viewing can often be done in the outskirts of the city in the foothills- moose and bears are often seen here. For a better chance to see bears and Dall sheep, try the Denali and Katmai National Parks, or one of the parks closer to the city. In the winter and even right into the spring, skiing and snowboarding are popular, and there are many skifields within easy reach of Anchorage.

From Anchorage, there are several places you can continue your road trip. It is a 3 hour drive along the beautiful Seward Highway to Seward on Resurrection Bay. Also in this direction is the Kenai Fjords National Park, where nearly 40 glaciers slide towards the sea from the Harding icefield. Prince William Sound is to the east of Anchorage and a beautiful place ringed by the Chugach Mountains. Boat tours are a great way to see the Sound, and the town of Valdez on the Sound is reachable by AK1 and AK4 which loop around from Anchorage. Heading north on AK3 through the wilderness will take you to Fairbanks, a small place which is the biggest inland city in the state. From there, Canada is not too far away.
