Here are some suggestions by area:
Patong Beach is a both a popular and pretty beach and the largest in the area. Its wide coastline has soft white sand and warm clear water as well as lots of entertainment venues and beach activities and water sports.
Kata Beach is the place to head if you want to relax and have some peace and quiet. The beach is backed b palm trees and idyllic scenery, the waves can get quiet fierce here so if you enjoy surfing it’s a great option.

Koh Pha Ngan
Party beach at Haad Rin is undeveloped and ideal for swimming, but that is not the only reason that it is popular. There are plenty of things to do here and the beach slopes very gently into the sea making it ideal for people travelling with children. The road from Bangkok is relatively straightforward and there are lots of places to stay for visitors with motorhome rental or campervan hire vehicles.
Lamai beach is probably the one of the beaches that is not too busy, unless its peak season, and not to quiet, and it has a good combination of things to do and places to eat.
