10 Fantastic Places to Visit on Your Campervan Holiday
For holiday makers with a motorhome rental or campervan hire, Switzerland is amongst one of the best places to visit, not only for saving some cash on the expensive hotels and restaurants, but also because of the great scenery. These are some of the not so obvious places to start with.
Schilthorn. Go to the top of the beautiful mountain of Schilthorn which is home to the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant. The mountain was used in the location of the James Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." Getting here is a bit of a trek, but the cable car gives some outstanding views. Once you reach 2970m above sea level have a delicious hot chocolate as you revolve 360 degrees and take in the view. Take a walk to the edge, quite scary, but worth the fear factor, for views of the Eiger.
Jungfraujoch. This is the mountain adjacent to the Schilthorn. When you get to Jungfraujoch, take the Jungfrau railway to the highest point in Switzerland at 3454m. Here there’s an observatory deck which has indoor and outdoor sections, there’s also an indoor ice palace where everything is made of …ice, including the walkways and walls and some very intricate sculptures.
Wengen- Murren. Has some incredible waterfalls which appear from nowhere, run down the sides of mountains and then simply disappear again. There are also some great places to hike and picnic, so come prepared.
Interlaken. Interlaken lies between two lakes, Thunersee and Brienzersee. This is where you can indulge in a favourite dish of fondue; pots of melted chocolate or cheese, it’s also a good place for souvenir shopping. Interlaken is a small tourist town, friendly and un-crowded; it’s also a good base for trips on the lakes or into the mountains.
Swiss National Park. Is found right in the very east of the country, it’s an area rich in wildlife such as Golden eagles, vultures and elk. There is only one road suitable for commercial traffic, but there are over 80Km which are suitable for exploring on foot.
The Tropical Alps. This may seem strange but in Switzerland you can find palm trees. The stretch between the Germany in the north and Italy in the south has both glaciers and palm trees in close proximity. This is a relatively unknown are for tourists,
Aletsch Glacier. At 23Km long this is the longest and most incredible glacier in the Alps, it’s also the easiest to access. This was the first UNESCO World Heritage sight, and it’s advised if you are visiting this area to take the two hour trip with one of the Betterlap guides.
Appenzellerland. This is the where Heidi lived! No just famous for Heidi but cows and cheese too. The area also has some lovely walking trails and the largest Nordic fitness park in the country.
Lucerne. The place to see timber bridges, a traditional old town and to take a cruise on the lake which is ringed by mountains.
Interlaken. For visitors who love outdoor sports, try your hands at anything from skydiving and bungee jumping to white-water rafting and canyoning
