Hold onto your hats, brace yourself, and remember to keep your eyes peeled, this is a road trip to remember on your motorhome rental or campervan hire holiday in India.

Delhi to Varanasi – Allow at least 25 days

This road trip visits some of the most popular tourist spots in the north of the country.

Spend a few days exploring the capital Delhi before collecting you motorhome rental or campervan hire and moving out onto the open road.  Head for Rajasthan and the Sariska tiger reserve.  Spend a night or two here doing game drives and other jungle activities.

On route to your next destination Pushkar, stop off and explore Ajmer which is surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains.  When you reach the lake town of Pushkar make sure you visit the remains of the beautiful Jain temple, and the Hindu Brahma Temple.

From Pushkar head for the romantic city of Udaipur, another lake town.  This is home to the beautiful Lake Palace Hotel, take a boat trip, and stop off at the palace for afternoon tea.

From Udaipur it’s a leisurely drive to the blue city of Jodhpur famous for its blue houses, the Mehangarh fort, and palace.  You will need to allow a day here to visit all the sights and then start early to get tot your next stop across the Thar Desert, Jaisalmer.

Jaislmer has a lovely old town, and is one of the best places to see locals perform traditional dances which are often accompanied by a feast.  Next we move from the blue city to the pink city of Jaipur via the desert and Bikane, an ancient trade route.

You will need to spend a few days in Jaipur to visit all the wonderful sights such as the Palace of the Winds and the Amber Palace which simply has to be visited on the back of an elephant.  It might be touristy, but you’ve got to do it!

Once you leave Jaipur visit the wildlife in the Bhratpur sanctuary which is best for its birdlife, there is a nice camp here and a great place to get up early with the lark (no pun intended).

Your next stop will be Fatehpur Sikri, the old capital of Akbar.  Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Hall of Audiences, before moving on to Agra.

Agra is another city where you will want to spend some time.  Many people say that you must visit the famous Taj Mahal at sunrise, but don’t worry, the palace is beautiful whatever time of the day you visit.  In fact if you visit at sunrise or sunset your pictures will have an orange glow, if you go during the day, you can really appreciate the white marble mausoleum.  This really is an absolutely wonderful site to see, it simply cannot be described in words, you will just have to see for yourself!  Agra is not just about the Taj, there are lots of other places to visit within the city, so make sure you allow yourself enough time.

Your next stop will be the holy city of Varanasi, known as the passport to heaven.  This city is not for everyone, but if you want to experience real India, then coming to this important place on the Ganges is one you shouldn’t miss.

This is an incredible journey, at times the roads will be potholed and busy, but take your time and enjoy a rather unique experience on your motorhome rental or campervan holiday in India
