Motorhoming in Reykjavík

Iceland’s capital, and only city, Reykjavík is a fun place to spend some time; literally, as it’s known as the fun capital.  Its not just about fun, there are some excellent places to visit here, and many visitors don’t even leave the city, although we recommend you do with your campervan hire Iceland!

Services for Motorhome Rental vehicles.
There is one campsite, Reykjavík Campsite, a five star campsite, located 3 km from the city centre. The Campsite is open mid May until mid September and can accommodate up to 650 people in tents, cabins, motorhomes or caravans with electric hook ups and excellent facilities.

Top things to see and do

Take a tour.    There are a few to choose from, whale watching is very popular, and you usually get to see dolphins too. An alternative to whale watching is puffin watching.  These are short trips from Reykjavík harbour out to the puffin colony, if you’re lucky, you may get to see a whale; two trips for the price of one! If your stomach won’t stand up to a trip in a boat, a good land based alternative is a tour to see the Northern Lights.  These tours only run when there’s a good chance of seeing something, if there’s a full moon, or its exceptionally cloudy they are cancelled, if you get to go remember to wear some warm clothing.

One for the girls. Visit the Blue Lagoon.  There is so much to choose from here, relaxing water treatments, massages, refreshing waterfall, and Blue Lagoon silica mud masks.  Not only is there the famous outdoor Blue Lagoon, but a indoor lagoon overlooking it, with a second floor relaxation area, geothermal steam bath and sauna, refreshing cold water sprinkle, restaurants, bars; the list goes on and on and on.

One for the boys. Do a Gullfoss geyser and snowmobiling tour. Visit some incredible sights such as glaciers and geysers, and when you get as far as a normal bus can go, get kitted up into a ski suit, gloves and a helmet and off you go to the glacier at Langjökul.  Follow the guide onto Iceland’s second largest glacier and make tracks in the virgin snow and ice.

Just for fun…visit the Restaurant Reykjavík and Ice Bar.  The bar is a single room made entirely of ice, ice walls, ice bar, and fur covered ice chairs.  On arrival, you put on a quilted nylon cape, and once inside you get a Brennivin, also known as the Black Death, to keep you warm.  It’s a great photo opportunity, and then you need to leave.  Afterwards, maybe visit the restaurant where ‘Let's talk local’ is held every night.  This is a great way to learn about Iceland’s history from 300BC right up to present day in a hilarious way.  The restaurant is pretty good too if you like fish.

Reykjavík is a unique place to visit on a motorhome rental or campervan hire holiday, and much different from usual holiday hot spots!
