The city of Puerto Natales is the gateway to the amazing Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia.  This is a busy and bustling port for both locals and tourists; and for visitors on a motorhome rental or campervan hire holiday it’s a place to spend time getting together provisions for the next leg of an incredible journey south.  This is where the great outdoors is wild and awe inspiring, with incredible national parks, mountains, and wildlife.  Here are a few suggestions of how to spend your time here.

This area relies on its tourist industry so there are many tourist services, shops, restaurants, hotels, and hostels to choose from, unfortunately, there is only one campsite.  But, who needs choice when in the centre at Esmeralda 517 you can find Camping Josmar 2 (don’t know what happened to Camping Josmar 1).  The site offers hot showers a café and all the necessary comforts whilst you’re staying here.  If you prefer to stay outside the city the best option would be to pull off the road, as there is lots of open space!

Top things to see and do

The top attraction of this area has to be Torres Del Paine.  This is a dream destination for those who enjoy hiking, the national park has huge mountains and clear lakes, and there are well maintained trails for all abilities from easy to extremely technical.  You could spend days here just appreciating the views and the wildlife such as eagles, guanacos, and nandues and then there are the glaciers and icebergs, the hugeness of it all is incredible, it makes you feel very small.

Take a day trip out onto The Ultima Esperanza or Channel of Last Hope.  The waters have some breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains; you will get some incredible photos at sunset.  The journey passes through some wonderful places, waterfalls, icebergs, and glaciers and there are endless opportunities for bird watching, photography, and even sea lions to amuse you.

For something a little different why not visit Pingo Salvaje and take a horse back tour.  The hills above Laguna Sophia are home to a remote canyon where condors fly overhead and peace is everywhere.  There are lots of different routes to choose from, and experiences can last from a couple of hours to three days.  With some of the trips you even get a delicious meal thrown in.

Puerto Natales is an important stop off point on any motorhome rental or campervan hire holiday in southern Chile, its where you can relax before or after a trip further south, but its also a wonderful place for visitors who enjoy the wonderful outdoors.
