Motorhoming in Puerto Montt
Puerto Montt is another of those important places that marks the beginning, or end, of a motorhome rental or campervan hire adventure. This is where you can get together everything you’ll need for the journey south to places such as the incredible Patagonia, or Carretera Austral, or is somewhere to think over what you have just seen; it’s also the crossroads for travelling to Argentina. The peaks of the Andes tower above it and the ocean gives a taste of things to come, although there are some colorful houses, this is not the picturesque lands of the rest of the Lake District, but it is however a place of necessity and has everything a traveller needs including some good restaurants; try the local salmon, its incredible.
Services for Motorhome Rental vehicles
There are a couple of campsite options in Puerto Montt, Camping Anderson, and Camping Los Paredes. Camping Anderson is an ecological campsite 20 Km from the centre, its selling point is its location, right on the shores of Bahia de Hueguillahue. Camping Los Paredes is nearer to town with good showers, apparently!
Top things to see and do
Apart from all the necessary things you need to do here, there are a few things you shouldn’t miss outside the city.
Volcan Osorno is a great place to visit between November and April, the rest of the year it’s covered in snow. Great because of the views and experience, but can be a bit wet, so remember your waterproofs. There is a ski lift which takes you half way up, and if you want to go any further it’s probably best to take a guided tour with all the equipment included.
In the same area around Puerto Varas, a very picturesque place and a nice place to over night, is the lovely Lake Llanquihue with some amazing views of both Volcan Osorno and Volcan Calbuco. There is a 190Km drive around the lake which takes in two very nice places to stop, Puerto Octay and Fruitillar.
Visit the national park of Los Saltos de Petrohue, as you would expect there is some incredible scenery and perhaps the clearest water you will ever see.
Take a ferry across the Chacao Channel to the island of Chiloe. It’s only half an hour, and amazingly ferries run every 20 minutes during peak periods and once an hour in less busy times. The island is home to the Chiloé National Park, which is home some very ancient flora and fauna.
Puerto Montt may not be as picturesque as the incredible places and spaces that surround it, but it’s a very welcoming city with everything you’ll need on a motorhome rental or campervan hire holiday in the county.
