Motorhoming in Bariloche
Bariloche, or as it’s officially known, San Carlos de Bariloche, is a city at the foot of the Andes on the shores of Lago Nahuel Huapi. During the winter it’s one of Argentina’s most famous skiing resorts, and during the summer a great place to relax and spend a few nights on your motorhome rental or campervan hire holiday in Argentina.

As this is a tourist area there are lots of hotels and hostels, but there isn’t a lot of call for campsites during the winter. There are a few places around the lake where it is possible to stay overnight, and one campsite called Petunia Camping, which is all you need really!
Top things to see and do
Cerro Tronador is a wonderful mountain. It has walking trails for all fitness levels and some breathtaking scenery, even if you aren’t keen on walking, the scenery, and clean air make a walk in this area something you shouldn’t miss.
Take to the aguas blancas for a spot of white-water rafting. There are a few companies offering day trips over class II and III rapids. No previous experience is necessary as full tuition is given, as well as the necessary safety equipment such as hard hats and lifejackets. Instructor/guides will lead you gently through the waters before you stop for lunch and then you’re off again, so don’t eat too much, enough said ! It’s not all hard work, further down the river there are sandy beaches where you can stop and swim if you haven’t already been in the water, and at the end of the day there’s an end of rafting feast if you can stomach it.
Visit the ‘Chocolate del Turista’, one of Argentina’s best chocolate shops. It’s not just chocolate, they serve some mouth watering ice cream and cakes, but the ultimate are their truffles which you sample for free.
Get on your bike and explore the Circuito Chico. The route takes you around the lake past some of the small cottage industries of the area which specialise in making candles, ceramics, and clocks. The route isn’t too difficult, there are only a few hills to encounter, but the views are absolutely beautiful.
Take a ride on the Tren Historico a Vapor Bariloche a stream train from 1912. Travel from San Carlos de Bariloche railway station to your final destination Perito Moreno-Los Juncos railway station, 40 Kilometres away. The train stops at strategic photo stops where you can alight and spend a few moments admiring the view before you continue on your journey. When you arrive at you final destination its time for some lunch or maybe take a walk around Los Juncos Lake Wildlife Reserve or climb elephant hill for a more elevated view.
Bariloche is a very pretty and clean area to visit on a motorhome rental or campervan hire holiday in Argentina, the lake and the mountains are especially attractive if you enjoy walking, hiking or water sports, but even if you don’t the amazing views will surely be enough.
